Wesomnia, handcrafting weighted blankets for mental health

Wesomnia is a Swedish sustainable brand founded to produce a new kind of weighted blankets, with the mission to improve sleep and reduce stress for people.

We wanted to make weighed blankets that were as good in function as the ones in hospitals but also beautiful to look at with materials and a production line that we could stand behind. They are handcrafted in wool and hand-filled with Swedish wheat here in Sweden.

For me, as a clinical psychologist, it was very important that it not only would have a sustainability aspect for the persons using them ( improve sleep and reduce stress levels), producing them but also was the materials per se an important choice.

We usually say that we use “kind materials”, which we really feel people appreciate.

This was two years ago, and now my youngest daughter is taking a big part in how Wesomnia is moving forward. We now handpick and also produce our articles. As a result, we only have products that we really appreciate ourselves and that, in most cases, have some purpose for improving wellbeing.

As my daughter put it, “Products with a purpose” is our vision today.

We want people coming into our store in Stockholm to calm down a little, sit down, try the blankets, scents and oils, and take a moment to experience with all senses the calm you can find in a quite easy and natural way.

We also enjoy discussing psychology and wellbeing with the people visiting us – a bonus that comes with the job.

Our name Wesomnia, stems from thoughts of we had developing our first product, which was our weighted blankets.

“Somnia” means “dream” in latin and the prefix we was my partner who thought we would make it a little more international.

Today we view us as a Scandinavian wellness brand and “sleeping part” isn’t the only leg we stand on.

Ulrika Dehlryd, Wesomnia Founder

What is the history behind Wesomnia?

I have been working as a clinical psychologist for over 20 years and have always dreamed of starting something independently.

When I did a life change moving from the south of Sweden to Stockholm, I had the opportunity, together with my partner, to make my dream come true. At the same time, my youngest daughter, Emma, who always has been very interested in and creative with photography, among other things ended her studies in economics.

Thisis how we ended up where we are today, with my daughter and me as the heart of Wesomnia.

Why did you start it?

This question I had before and still don’t think I know for sure other than that I always had this entrepreneur side since I was quite young. I have always longed to start something new and maybe a little “innovative”.

I have a fantastic profession as a psychologist, which I think I use in the company, but differently. I think it’s shown both in our choice of products and the approach and atmosphere we want to have in our store in Stockholm.

Also, as Wesomnia is developing, being a family company, I feel it’s a privilege to work with my daughter, where her personality and competence add essential aspects to the experience and knowledge it brings to the company. Finally, I think our age span makes us interesting to men and women within a wide age range.

Why is Wesomnia Sustainable?

Trying to be as ethical and sustainable as possible was a natural part of our vision. Building our business, we wanted sustainability to be a part of our DNA. Therefore, we strive to choose natural materials and products that have as little impact on the climate as possible. Furthermore, we believe keeping social sustainability in mind when developing products is essential. And as best we can, we try to ensure that the people who help us with our products and business work under fair conditions.

With our weighted blankets (which took a long time to develop), we wanted to make sure the materials used ( wool and wheat) held the standard we wanted and ensure that the people helping us made them have good working conditions. Since I have worked with people my whole life, it was crucial to know that they are produced in a way that feels ok for us.

At Wesomnia, we also talk about a sustainable lifestyle on a personal level. We hope our products will encourage our customers to live healthy and sustainable lifestyles by selling high-quality and functional products that contribute to long durability. And as mentioned earlier, many of our products are products with purpose. As such, the products often have a function that can increase the feeling of well-being.

We try to ensure we keep close to our vision with all our products, as we have expanded the brand to be more than just weighted blankets.

In what way do you believe you are improving people's lives and the world?

As mentioned above, we really believe that there is very much you can do  yourself to improve your health and life quality in a natural way. Therefore, feeling that you yourself have the power to improve your physical and mental health we really consider an important mission.

So many people suffer from stress, insomnia and anxiety in our society today. Many things being stressful and uncertain these days and maybe out of your personal control, make it even more important to see what we can do to improve our own state of mind. We do believe that if we can help people find calm and energy a little more it will have a great impact on their surrounding and the world around them.

Where can we find Wesomnia products?

You can find us on our online store. We also have our flag ship store in the very centre of Stockholm. Also, we have an agent in Japan where we hope to be established before the end of the year.
